The Philippine Government in a statement commented on plans of the rebel group to conduct a internal investigation by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) among its ranks to identify those involved in the kidnapping of Irish priest Father Michael Sinnott. This was said in a press briefing, Monday, in Manila, by Deputy Spokesperson and Press Undersecretary Anthony Golez.

The junior spokesman relayed to media, the Philippine Administration of President Gloria Arroyo’s position on the anti-kidnapping effort by a rebel group that has seemingly had problems maintaining its ranks in the wake of some its members increasingly going agianst the position of the rebel groups central committee, to come to terms and renew talks and take steps to work towards peace.  ”This latest action of the MILF is a welcome addition to show good faith and adherence to the cause of peace in the wake of its ongoing peace talks with the government.” USEC Golez told reporters in Manila.

“If the MILF is offering their sincerest support or action towards the resolution of this crisis, it will be welcomed. Nevertheless, our police authorities supported by the military authorities will still be relentless in pursuing perpetrators,” Golez said.

He noted that the Provincial Crisis Management Committee led by Zamboanga Del Sur Governor Aurora Cerilles is now exhausting all efforts for the recovery of Sinnott.

Golez added that authorities are using the video to gain important information as to the identity of the kidnappers and their exact location. Press Secretary Cerge Remonde earlier said that the MILF is assisting the government in the resolution of the case. Sinnott who was abducted last Oct. 10 in Pagadian City is a member of the Missionary Society of St. Columban based in the province.

The government has reiterated a no-ransom policy in the case of the Irish priest, a long-time missionary who has served children with special needs in the country.
