Corazon C. Aquino 1933-2009 “A meaningful life.”

31 July 2009 One Comment

When the first reports of Cory. as former President Aquino is known in the Philippines – starting the 4th of May this year of being brought to the Hospital for confinement and treatment of colon cancer.  A cold sudder went through me – I’d had my fill of hospitals and cancer care – on a personal level 2 years ago when my mom was confined for a long battle with cancer – looking at President Aquino going into the hospital th frail walk and slight build of body told me much of what might be the last public look of her we would see.
But even in weakness of her sickness the strength of her character was clear and the eyes bore the pain one never heard from her lips in public yet still caring and strong even as her cancer suffering was clearly visible.

She in many ways to many Filipino’s was a like what former President Estrada described her to be; ” – a kind but strict mom. ” Estrada said further, “Today our country has lost a mother. This is a sad day for the Filipino people,” Estrada went on to say that,”President Aquino has not only been an icon of democracy but has stood as the guiding voice of our people since EDSA 1. She was a woman of both strength and graciousness,” Estrada

To many across a land of thousands of islands a voice that clearly spoke on issues sometimes not popular but words that often needed to be said.

US Ambassador to Manila Kristy Kenney in a message on facebook said it well- ” A bright light has gone out. Wishing President Cory the joy of eternal life and offering sympathy and prayers for the Aquino family, Filipinos and all those across the world whose lives she touched. ”

Many in the world started praying for the elder statesperson of the Philippines who for a long time became a voice of at times calm at other times strong protest always seemingly fair and almost grandmotherly in her advice to the country in times of crisis.

I covered both the 1986 campaign in rgw snap elections as young radio reporter and later Pres. Aquino her self for a times. I remember it all like it was yesterday – I got a to interview her a few times for news stories i did mostly unscheduled interviews one got in the rush to cover stories on a daily basis. I always found her a calm and very easy to get comments from when needed. I also remember being suspended for playing her voice on rado during the snap elections.

Sen. Benigno’ Noynoy’ Aquino III statement:

“Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 am of cardio-respiratory arrest,” her son, Senator Benigno Aquino III., told reporters in Manila. “She would have wanted us to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continuous love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country,” Aquino III said further…

President Arroyo’s Statement:

Today, the Philippines lost a national treasure. Cory Aquino helped lead the revolution that restored democracy and rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril.

Our nation will mourn her passing. History was thrust upon her when her noble husband was cut down in the prime of his life as he fought for democracy and rule of law. She picked up the standard from the fallen warrior Ninoy and helped lead our nation to a brighter day.

I am announcing today that we will officially observe a 10-day period of national mourning. Our hearts go out to the family in this hour of grief and sorrow. The nation prays for Cory and her family

Not everyone may have agreed with her point of view on the issues, but no one could question her personal integrity – nor her commitment to democracy. But Citizen Cory as she liked to be called after stepping down from power in what had been the first of three peaceful turnovers of transition in the country.Albeit the 4th turnover and her own rise to power came at the hands of ‘people power’ popular revolts.

A day of national mourning has been declared in the Philippines – plans for a full state funeral are being readied, her family is asking for one day with her reports say the entire family was present at her bedside when she passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning in Manila.

The world remembers the late President of the Philippines;
